Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL
Q:
Do you offer insurance other than car and home?
A: Not yet, but we’re working on it. Watch this space!
HOME INSURANCE
Q:
I’m a student living in halls or student accommodation, do I need contents
insurance?
A: Your parents’ or guardians’ home insurance policy
should cover your possessions while you are away studying. Check their policy
as it’s not always the case and the insurer will usually need to be informed,
and expensive laptops and phones sometimes need to be itemised on the policy.
Q:
When is the best time to get a new quote for home insurance?
A: A good time is on receipt of your renewal notice
because you’ll know the cost of staying with your current insurance provider,
and the terms. And you’ll know straight away if we’re able to save you money
for the same or better levels of protection.
Q:
What happens if I move house?
A: If you have contents insurance, you’ll need to let
your insurer know your new address. For home or buildings insurance, you’ll be
cancelling your cover on your current property and getting new insurance for
your new property so it’s best to start that process well ahead of any move
date, and cover details will be required by your mortgage provider if you have
one.
Q:
Can I get standard home insurance to cover a holiday home?
A: You may need specialised home insurance if the
property is unoccupied for extended periods of time.
Q: I
am a landlord with one or more rental properties, do I need contents insurance?
A: Your tenants should have insurance to cover their
personal possessions but you’ll need house insurance to cover the fabric of the
building and any contents you provide – such as white goods.
Q: I’m
not sure what home insurance I need – can you help?
A: Buildings insurance covers the building’s structure.
Contents insurance covers the personal possessions or contents of the building
such as TVs, computers, clothes etc. Combined home/house insurance combines the
building with the contents on one policy to keep things simple.
Q:
What is an insurance excess?
A: When you claim on your home insurance, any applicable
excess will need to be paid by you, with the rest of the costs being covered by
insurance. You can usually increase the excess to lower the cost of insurance,
and vice versa.
CAR INSURANCE
Q:
When is the best time to get a new quote for car insurance?
A: A good time is on receipt of your renewal notice
because you’ll know the cost of staying with your current insurance provider,
and the terms. And you’ll know straight away if we’re able to save you money
for the same or better levels of protection.
Q:
I’m changing my car. What do I need to do?
A: Contact your current insurer with the new car details
as it may be cheaper to pay a small admin fee to switch vehicle details with
your insurer until the policy renewal date. But also look around because there
may be a better deal out there. Get in touch with us at WeSearchUSwitch and
we’ll check the market for you.
Q:
Do you have multi-car policies?
A: Yes we do! We have relationships with hundreds of
insurance providers and many offer multi-car policies. Just let us know the
details of each vehicle and we can search for the best deal.
Q:
What is an insurance excess?
A: When you claim on your car insurance, any applicable
excess will need to be paid by you, with the rest of the costs being covered by
insurance. You can usually increase the excess to lower the cost of insurance,
and vice versa.
Q: Can
I drive someone else’s car on my policy?
A: you might be covered if you have a comprehensive car
insurance policy. Check your certificate of insurance to see if you’re covered
for Driving Other Cars (DOC) as not all policies offer it. If this is an
important feature for you, please let us know and we can include it as a search
criteria.
Q:
Can I add a driver to my car insurance policy?
A: Yes, absolutely! The person doing the bulk of the
driving should be the main driver on the policy, with occasional drivers listed
as named drivers. Depending on their age, occupation, previous accidents and
any convictions your car insurance costs could go up or down.
Q:
What is a No Claims Discount or Bonus?
A: If you’ve not made a claim on your insurance, insurers
will reward you with a discount which gets bigger each year you don’t claim as
you’re seen as a lower risk. Some insurers may require proof of NCD/NCB which
you can obtain from your previous insurer.
Q:
What happens if I move house?
A: If you have car insurance, you must inform your
insurer as well as the DVLA of your new address and update your car
registration and driving license to the new address.
